Story County Hazard Mitigation Plan
Story County Multi-Jurisdictional Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan
The best way to save lives and protect property is to reduce our risk to the hazards we face. Through the efforts of the Hazard Mitigation Planning Committee that included representatives from most of the communities and school districts in Story County, we developed the Story County Multi-Jurisdictional Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan. It's a tool to help jurisdictions identify the risk they face and develop strategies to reduce these risk. It also meets the requirements of the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (DMA200) which qualifies participating jurisdictions to be eligible to receive pre-disaster mitigation funds that may be made available in the wake of federally-declared disasters.
Our Story County Hazard Multi-jurisdictional/Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan must be reviewed and revised every five (5) years to meet Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requirements. The Story County Hazard Mitigation Planning Committee began the revision process for this plan in February, 2018 and completed it in April, 2019. Following the adoption of this plan, it is the intent of the participating jurisdictions to implement the mitigation strategies they chose during the plans development.
Communities which participated in planning and are adopting the plan are as follows: Ames, Cambridge, Collins, Colo, Gilbert, Huxley, Kelley, Maxwell, McCallsburg, Nevada, Roland, Sheldahl, Slater, Story City and unincorporated Story County. Additionally, the following school districts participated in the planning process and are adopting the plan: Ames, Ballard, ColoNESCO, Collins/Maxwell, Gilbert, Nevada, and Roland-Story. Iowa State University was a great partner throughout the planning process and have been fully integrated into every aspect of the plan.
We encourage everyone to read the plan to learn more about hazard mitigation for your community and we invite you to provide comments and suggestions on the plan to your city administration or school district. The link to the plan is below.
