    Missing out on this year's Evening Prairie walks? Sign up to receive some information for self-led exploration! A flyer of what's blooming in Story County prairies will be sent out every 2-3 weeks based on the amount of new blooms to be found. We'll also include the park or trail where the blooms were seen so you have a place to get started, but there are MANY prairie areas across the county where you might be able to find these plants!

  2. Captain BushTale's Treasure Hunt

    Ahoy, Matey! Captain BushTale here, and I have a quest for you! Can you find my hiding crew? They are hiding at two different parks: McFarland Park (56461 180th Street, Ames) Christiansen Forest Preserve (55973 310th Street, Huxley) To find them you will need to download or print the maps I have made for you! I have left a trail of clues and riddles for you to find and follow to help lead you to my hiding crewmate. Can you guess what kind of animal they are before finding them? Let us know you found the hiding crewmate by posing for a photo, then post on Instagram or Facebook. Use #CaptainBushtale, and be sure you tag Story County Conservation! ~Captain BushTale Long pants and closed-toed shoes are recommended to participate in this activity as some of my clues might be off trail. The quest begins July 20 and will stay out through the end of August.

  3. CANCELED FLOAT V (Backpacking Trip)

    August 6, 2020, 6:00 AM - August 12, 2020, 12:00 PM @ Campers will meet at McFarland Park

    Those completing grades 9 - 12 can take an exciting seven-day backpacking trek to Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park! Campers will spend three nights back-country camping in 60,000 acres of true Midwest wilderness on the shores of Lake Superior. Surround yourself with towering virgin timber, secluded lakes, and countless waterfalls. Enjoy Lake Superior sea cave exploration on kayaks. How do you earn a spot? Complete an application and letter of support by 4 pm May 18, 2020. If selected, you will begin your journey with a mandatory training day on June 19, 2020 from 9:00 a.m - 4:00 p.m. at McFarland Park. Scholarships are available through the Iowa Association of Naturalists at Participants will be responsible for meals on the road, sleeping pads, sleeping bags, water bottles, and clothing. Once participants are selected they will received a detailed list of needed supplies.
